Depending on who you're talking to, a big pile of frass can either lead to calling an exterminator or getting out a fork. Here's a nice recipe for frass with cabbage and bacon, for instance:
Ingredients 1 kg White cabbage (up to 1.5) 250 GM minced meat 2 French rolls (up to 3) 2 lg Onions (up to 3) 1/4 l Milk Little amount of bacon
Instructions Chop white cabbage coarsely, boil shortly in salt water and pour into a sieve. Cut the french rolls in small pieces and soak in milk. Mix thoroughly minced meat, cut bacon, finely minced onions, soaked rolls and cabbage. If necessary, add a bit of the water in which the cabbage was boiled. Put the mixture in a souffle form, sprinkle some flour and butter flakes over it. Bake for 1 - 1.5 hours in the oven.
I have noticed a dramatic increase in the power of hand dryers lately. Anyone who has experienced either the Dyson Airblade or the Excel Xlerator has to wonder whether they walked away from the experience with the same amount of skin they went into it with.
Do these two increasingly available hand-drying options signal a new plateau of technology, or a drive to top the competition with more and more speed? One can't help but think of the exponential growth in blades on razors. Will our hands survive what is to come?
But, I'll bet Michael Bay could do a better job with the new Batman flick...in an alternate universe. Fortunately, obtaining Michael Bay screenplays from alternate universes is among our many talents here at PoF. Enjoy.
Ok, so it was just rejected and not actually from an alternate universe. Still, imagine the poor life-form being subjected to that very film in an alternate universe. Frightening stuff.
This will be one of the few movies I'll be willing to shell out 9 bucks to see in the theater this year. Wired has the scoop on the special effects (or relative lack thereof) here, courtesy of Jacob.
Problem: Suicide bombers may detonate their bomb and kill a lot of people.
Solution: It may look like an umbrella, but that's actually a kevlar net fired from a special gun to encapsulate and contain a bomb's blast. The net also contains a tube for dispensing fire suppressant agent (the tank is worn on the back of the net operator in Figures 6 and 7 above).
"As requested in his will, his body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his 'Auto-icon'. Originally kept by his disciple Dr. Southwood Smith, it was acquired by University College London in 1850. The Auto-icon is kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of the College. For the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the college, the Auto-icon was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where he was listed as "present but not voting". Tradition holds that if the council's vote on any motion is tied, the auto-icon always breaks the tie by voting in favour of the motion.
"The Auto-icon has always had a wax head, as Bentham's head was badly damaged in the preservation process. The real head was displayed in the same case for many years, but became the target of repeated student pranks including being stolen on more than one occasion. It is now locked away securely."

So for those of you who haven't been keeping tabs on Todd Seavey... Todd hosts a monthly debate in the basement of a bar on the lower east side of Manhattan. The debates are an eclectic mix of all sorts of topics including things like "Does Christian Music Suck?" and "Should We Deport all Illegal Aliens?" The debaters are all volunteers and the style is much what you would expect from intellectuals hanging out in a basement bar. Anyhow, Todd's most recent debate "Should Conservatives and Libertarians Vote for Barr Instead of McCain?" has topped them all. Apparently, part way through the debate, Bob Barrshowed up! That may be the coolest thing I have ever heard that relates to the Libertarian Party. Kudos to Todd and the Jinx Society for making politics seem interesting again.

2. It was a postal inspector who submitted a proposal for an updated system in 1944.
When I go to the Post Office, I’m lucky if I can find someone who isn’t breathing through a tube - but, apparently, in 1944, postal workers were so motivated by what they were doing that they put in overtime developing new systems for delivering mail. (It should be noted, however, that this system wasn’t implemented until the 1960s and, even then, it wasn’t mandatory… thus restoring my faith in their ineptitude.)

In the past week I've noticed an interesting development regarding the use of religious signage: people are getting over it.
While there are certainly still plenty of Ten Commandments signs decorating lawns, I have now seen one haphazardly joining with some other cardboard to cover up a missing car window and another with a garage sale sign taped over the contents. Will the glut of "War is Not the Answer" signs meet a similar fate?

"By hooking up the controller to his laptop and writing some code, Mr. Grace has turned the plastic toy into a full-on synthesizer. Now, with each button he mashes, the guitar howls like the real thing.
"Grace, who rocks out beside a real drummer and singer, is in tune with a new wave of experimental music. Scores of amateur hackers have cracked open, reprogrammed, and commandeered video-game technology to create real-time original music.
"Grace and his band, the Guitar Zeros, encourage others to join the movement. Their website hosts step-by-step instructions for converting a Guitar Hero controller into a hacked ax."
"What do you think happens when you throw a slice of processed cheese (without removing the plastic wrapping) onto a lit barbeque? The plastic melts giving off highly toxic fumes and you are left with a pretty grim cheese/plastic mess welded on to your BBQ, right? WRONG!
"Unbelievably what actually happens, as discovered by the pioneers and inventors of the sport way back in 1997, is that the plastic pouch does not melt - even when the cheese inside eventually boils! Even more incredibly, as the cheese melts and the strange chemicals found in processed cheese turn to gas - the plastic pouch inflates until eventually all four corners lift off the BBQ and the pouch is fully inflated! Now under this pressure you might think that the pouch would eventually burst - but no - most of the time the seal remains intact!

Via The Perfect Substitute: "Why would it be the case that a prostitute in the spirit of competition not offer potential Johns the opportunity to 'pay' on merit after the transaction? I offer three explanations:
1. The prostitution market suffers from adverse-selection, and Johns are more likely to stiff (pardon the pun) the ladies, making the dominant business model to offer an up-front fee.
2. Consumers would prefer to pay up-front for psychological reasons. When I go to the restaurant and I am considering what the appropriate tip should be, I go through sort of a mental checklist: How was the service? How difficult was I? Did my kids spill drinks on the ground? Did my wife make a complicated order that required lots of amendments? I imagine that Johns would prefer not to reflect on what they just did with a similar checklist just like they may avoid a mirror for some time.
3. Prostitutes can capitalize on a systematic male-ego bias by making them pay first. The male ego says '$xxx sounds reasonable for the hours I am about to have with her' only to then spend a considerably shorter time. If they tipped after the fact they would be tipping on a shorter duration than they would have paid for up-front."
